Chapter 628: Choice
Chapter 628: Choice
Eventually, even Mr. Richardson completely lost patience.
One evening, Peter was suddenly summoned into the main study.
When he arrived, he noticed that his elder brother, Joy, was already standing there.
Once the servants left and the room became private, Mr. Richardson slowly looked toward Peter.
"I’ll give you one final choice," he declared coldly. "Leave Adriana and inherit the company... or stay with Adriana and leave the Richardson family forever."
Peter stared quietly at his father.
Truthfully, he had already expected this outcome long ago.
Still, hearing the words spoken aloud caused a dull ache to spread through his chest.
Yet his expression remained calm.
"If that’s the case," Peter replied softly, "then I’ll choose Adriana."
The moment those words left his mouth, Mr. Richardson’s face twisted furiously.
"Not only will I remove you from the line of succession," he shouted angrily, "but from today onward, I will no longer recognize you as my son!"
In truth, Mr. Richardson had only gone this far because he genuinely hoped Peter would eventually give in.
Between Joy and Peter, even he understood clearly that Peter was the superior heir.
Peter possessed sharper intelligence, calmer judgment, and far greater talent in business.
That was why Mr. Richardson desperately hoped Peter would abandon Adriana and return to the corporation fully.
But Peter never wavered.
Instead, he merely looked at his father calmly.
That composed expression only enraged Mr. Richardson further.
Finally, he turned toward Joy.
"From today onward," he announced loudly, "Joy will officially become the future heir of the Richardson family."
The moment those words echoed throughout the room, Joy’s lips curled into a smug grin.
Meanwhile, Peter slowly closed his eyes before opening them again silently.
A trace of disappointment flickered deep within them.
Peter turned around, intending to leave immediately.
However, Mr. Richardson suddenly called out to him again.
"Peter, there’s one more thing I want to announce."
Peter’s fists clenched tightly.
He slowly turned around and spoke in a low voice.
"Father... before you say anything else, remember this carefully."
The atmosphere suddenly became tense.
"Whatever you say tonight," Peter continued quietly, "I will remember for the rest of my life."
It was a desperate final warning.
Peter was telling his father clearly that if he truly chose to disown him tonight, then no matter how much regret came later, Peter would never return again.
Mr. Richardson paused briefly.
For the first time, hesitation flashed across his face.
However, before he could reconsider, Joy suddenly interrupted loudly.
"Peter, have some shame!" Joy shouted mockingly. "Are you seriously trying to emotionally blackmail your own father?"
Joy scoffed coldly.
"Have you forgotten how much he’s done for all of us? If you had even a little shame left, you would abandon Adriana immediately."
The moment Joy finished speaking, the hesitation inside Mr. Richardson’s eyes completely disappeared.
He looked back toward Peter with renewed coldness.
Then Mr. Richardson spoke again.
"Do you know why I’m officially handing the position to Joy already?"
Peter remained silent.
Mr. Richardson assumed Peter was upset over losing his position so suddenly. Thus, he continued proudly.
"Joy recently received a business proposal from Ms. Dawn herself," he declared. "Tomorrow, he’ll officially sign a one hundred million dollar contract."
The moment those words entered Peter’s ears, even he became visibly stunned.
He immediately turned toward Joy.
Mr. Richardson noticed his reaction and nodded smugly.
"It’s obvious now," he continued. "Ms. Dawn favors Joy far more than you. Clearly, she no longer likes Adriana either. The smartest decision for you now is to give Adriana up."
Hearing those words, Peter frowned deeply.
He slowly turned toward Joy.
"Why would Ms. Dawn help you?" he asked coldly.
Joy chuckled arrogantly.
"Well," he replied smugly, "that’s naturally because of my wife. Eliana happens to be connected to Ms. Dawn."
Peter’s brows furrowed instantly.
"Eliana?" he repeated in disbelief. "The Eliana from that medical family?"
His expression darkened further.
"How could someone like her possibly know Ms. Dawn?"
Although Peter’s tone carried more confusion than insult, Joy immediately took offense.
He let out a mocking laugh.
"Well, if your low-class wife Adriana can somehow become related to Ms. Dawn," Joy sneered, "then why can’t mine?"
The moment Joy referred to Adriana as low-class, Peter’s restraint finally shattered.
Without hesitation, he stepped forward and slapped Joy across the face violently.
Smack!
The sharp sound echoed throughout the room.
Joy stumbled backward in shock before rage exploded across his face.
At the same time, Mr. Richardson’s expression became utterly disappointed.
"That’s enough!" he shouted furiously. "I don’t want to see your face anymore!"
Peter let out a cold chuckle.
"Well," he replied calmly, "I’m not interested in staying either."
Without another word, he turned around and left.
That exact night, everything changed completely.
Every one of Peter’s bank cards became frozen.
His secret personal accounts were shut down.
Even his hidden investments mysteriously disappeared overnight.
Within mere hours, he was left with almost nothing.
As for family support... Peter never had a mother to rely on.
And his stepsister and stepmother had always hated him openly.
Thus, he never expected kindness from any of them.
Especially not when Nexi slowly emerged from the shadows with a mocking smile already spreading across her face.
Peter already knew why Nexi had appeared.
Sure enough, the moment she stepped closer, a smug chuckle escaped her lips.
"Well, brother," she sneered mockingly, "look at the state you’re in now. This is exactly why you should stay away from low-class women like Adriana."
Nixie folded her arms and continued viciously.
"Now look at yourself. You don’t even have money anymore," she scoffed. "And that woman? She’ll definitely leave you sooner or later. After all, Adriana is nothing but a gold digger through and through."
Peter did not even bother responding.
His expression remained cold and exhausted as he simply turned around and walked away.
However, Nexi clearly had no intention of stopping there.
She followed after him in her high heels, her mocking laughter echoing through the quiet night.
"Brother!" she called loudly. "As long as you kneel down and apologize to me properly, I might generously forgive everything that happened between us."
Her lips curled upward arrogantly.
"And if I’m in a good mood," she added smugly, "I’ll even allow you to stay in one of my private villas."
Peter still ignored her completely.
Soon, he raised his hand and hailed a taxi by the roadside.
The moment Nexi saw that, she immediately laughed loudly again.
"You don’t even have a single penny anymore!" she shouted mockingly. "How exactly are you planning to pay the taxi fare?"
The moment she said those words, the taxi driver instinctively glanced toward Peter suspiciously.
"Young man," the driver muttered awkwardly, "if you don’t have money, please don’t make things difficult for me. Life is already hard enough. I really can’t afford to give free rides."
Peter silently reached into his pocket.
Then he calmly pulled out a hundred-dollar bill and showed it to the driver.
The driver immediately fell silent.
Without another word, Peter stepped inside the taxi.
Outside, Nexi’s face darkened slightly upon being ignored repeatedly.
Still unwilling to give up, she shouted loudly toward the departing car.
"Just wait, Peter! One day, you’ll regret everything!"
However, Peter never looked back.
The taxi slowly disappeared into the night.
When the taxi finally stopped outside Adriana’s residence Peter remained seated motionless inside the taxi.
One minute passed. Then another.
The taxi driver eventually turned around awkwardly.
"Young man," he called carefully, "we’ve arrived."
However, Peter still sat there quietly.
His eyes looked tired and empty as countless thoughts swirled inside his mind.
’What should I even say to her now?’ he thought bitterly.
Meanwhile, inside the apartment, Adriana had been feeling restless for hours already.
A strange uneasiness lingered deep inside her chest, making her unable to relax no matter what she tried doing.
It felt as though something terrible had happened.
Yet she could not pinpoint exactly what it was.
After waiting anxiously inside her room for a long time, she finally took out her phone and started messaging Peter repeatedly.
At first, there was no reply.
Minutes passed painfully slowly. Then nearly an entire hour went by.
Just as Adriana began thinking Peter might never respond, her phone suddenly vibrated.
The moment she opened the message, her heart skipped violently.
Peter had told her everything.
He had lost his position. He was likely going to lose the Richardson name entirely.
The moment Adriana finished reading, panic instantly filled her chest.
Without wasting another second, she hurriedly got ready and rushed downstairs. Peter had not even told her where exactly he was waiting.
He had only sent a short message saying that he would come to find her.
As soon as Adriana stepped outside the building, her eyes immediately found him.
Peter was sitting alone on one of the benches nearby.
The restless anxiety inside Adriana’s heart instantly calmed the moment she saw him safe.
