Chapter 1296: The Direct Approach [Monthly Bonus 4]
Chapter 1296: The Direct Approach [Monthly Bonus 4]
Hearing Laurene’s confused muttering, Zaos quickly raised his hand and used wind magic to move the airship away from the building, an action that immediately made Laurene frown.
"Wait, why are we moving farther away?" Laurene blinked in confusion, temporarily deactivating her Mystic Eyes.
A small tear slipped from the corner of one eye as she turned to Zaos and quickly said, "Bring us closer instead, I need to see what that is!"
"I can sense the spatial law energy gathering from here. They might be trying to teleport all of us somewhere else," Zaos replied.
The man was already about to order his forces to begin pulling back, and hearing this, Laurene understood why Zaos had moved the airship away.
However, she quickly shook her head.
"No, it’s not a teleportation, it’s a pocket space! There’s a pocket space there, and they’re opening it to bring something out. We need to know what it is."
The instant Zaos heard this, he altered the spell he controlled and moved his hand downward, lowering the airship until it hovered close enough to almost touch the roof of the central building.
Laurene immediately reactivated her Mystic Eyes and directed her vision downward, looking past the underground floors just as the pocket space’s spatial barriers collapsed.
The moment it did, something that unleashed a powerful wave of magic power everyone instantly sensed appeared within the underground floor she was watching.
The instant Laurene saw it through her eyes, her vision glitched, and she staggered backwards.
"Laurene!" Eliza called out in worry as Evan caught her before she could fall backwards.
Eliza immediately reached out and cast healing magic on her, and Laurene, breathing heavily, then muttered, "Whatever they just brought out of that subspace... that thing is dangerous. The problem is, I can’t see any more of it unless I look at it directly in person. There are too many layers between me and it."
That was true.
The building Laurene had been looking through had more than 30 floors, all constructed with magically reinforced metals, and hundreds of people were currently fighting within those floors. On top of that, the thing she had been observing was located three floors underground.
Evan and Abigail were honestly impressed by the level of control Laurene had over her Mystic Eyes, considering she had managed to see through all of that and still properly discern the existence of a pocket space three underground levels below the building.
"It seems whatever they just brought out is essential for the trap they prepared for me," Evan said while helping Laurene back onto her feet.
Laurene immediately nodded.
"Definitely."
She had only managed to glimpse it for a moment, but whatever the source of the immense energy all of them could feel even from their current distance was, it was definitely not normal.
"So, do we pull back?" Abigail asked while looking toward Evan.
Evan stayed silent for a moment before slowly shaking his head, an action that made Eliza frown.
"What? You want us to go down there? To wherever that thing is?" Eliza asked incredulously.
"What if this whole trap is banking on you deciding to head down there after noticing whatever they just brought in?"
Her words held reason, but Evan’s response carried just as much reason behind it.
"I’m not worried about Ferrid predicting our movements," Evan replied. "I’m worried about what Ferrid might do if we decide not to go down there.
If his trap depends on us heading down there, then there’s no way he didn’t prepare something to force us into making that choice. That’s what concerns me."
The others understood what Evan feared the moment he said those words, and none of them could deny that his reasoning made sense.
Glancing toward Zaos, Evan asked, "Any suggestions?"
Zaos shook his head.
"We already chose the direct approach when we came here despite knowing this was a trap, so we might as well continue with that approach until the end."
Evan smiled lightly at Zaos’s response before speaking again.
"Very well then. There’s no Executive in this place, and well, I never intended to leave any of them alive anyway."
Looking back at Zaos, he asked, "Your clandestine forces know how to keep their mouths shut, don’t they?"
The instant Evan asked that question, Zaos immediately understood that Evan intended to personally take action.
"That won’t be a problem," Zaos replied.
"Good. Pull back all forces currently on the underground floors."
After saying that, Evan roused his magic power.
"I’m going on ahead. You guys can follow when you’re ready."
The moment those words left his mouth, Evan activated Blink and vanished from the airship.
While Zaos contacted the ground commander and ordered all elven forces attempting to breach the underground floors to retreat immediately, Evan reappeared right outside the central building’s main doors.
Sliding one hand into his pocket, he casually walked into the building.
Fighting between the elven special forces and Demonic Hand members still continued across the ground floor, but the moment Evan entered, several demonic humans instantly had their heads blasted apart by Burst Cannon.
Bodies collapsed continuously as Evan walked toward the entrance leading underground, passing by the elven soldiers who were retreating upward.
Naturally, they all noticed Evan, but none of them attempted to stop him since Zaos’ orders had specifically instructed them not to obstruct him in any way.
Meanwhile, the Demonic Hand members mistook the elves’ retreat as an opportunity and pressed their attacks harder, fully determined to protect whatever weapon or artifact had been unsealed underground until it could be activated against their enemies.
The combatants closest to the underground level’s largest entrance were all naturally surprised when they saw a single young man who still looked to be in his teens coming down the stairs that the elves had just run up.
One of the Demonic Hand members immediately rushed at him with a sword in hand, but a second later, his headless body collapsed to the floor at the bottom of the stairs.
Silence filled the underground corridor for a split second.
Then Evan’s full body came into view, and the faces of the demonic humans and elves contorted with recognition.
"Everlasting Chains."
That calm voice echoed through the hallway, and faster than any of them could react, lightning chains erupted from the ground and wrapped around every soul present, the lightning paralysing them and sealing their movements.
"Burst Cannon is a bit too slow," Evan muttered with a light frown.
He then raised his right hand and formed a circle with his thumb and index finger.
"Hydra."
With the activation of the skill, dozens of serpentine dragons made of flames, ice, and lightning instantly erupted from the ground behind Evan. But unlike the gigantic serpentine dragons Evan usually summoned, these ones were extremely small, each barely larger than the circular gap between his thumb and finger.
In exchange for their reduced size, however, their numbers had increased tremendously. There were far more Hydras than Evan had ever summoned.
The tiny dragons shot forward through the underground corridors at supersonic speed, tearing through the restrained Demonic Hand members while blasting flames, ice, and lightning across the underground floors.
Bodies were perforated as the serpentine dragons tore through them before continuing deeper underground, freezing corridors solid, burning entire sections apart, and electrocuting everything in their path.
In such a manner, Evan wiped out everything on the first and second underground floors.
When he reached the stairs leading to the third underground level, Evan sensed several Level 700 presences waiting behind the reinforced doors below.
He could tell there were dozens of trap magic spells cast on the door, and he could also sense the build-up of magic power that came with a spell’s activation from behind it.
’An ambush, huh?’
Evan stared at everything silently for a moment before raising his right hand and summoning the Vanquisher.
He deactivated his other active skills before pulling his arm back as magic power spiralled violently around the blade.
"Elemental Vortex."
The instant Evan thrust the sword forward, a roaring vortex of spiralling flames, ice, and lightning exploded outward from the blade.
The massive elemental storm smashed directly into the reinforced doors below, blasting apart huge sections of the underground structure before tearing through everything on the third floor.
Weaker Demonic Hand members were ripped apart instantly by the raging vortex, while others were lifted into the spiralling elemental current before being smashed against walls, torn apart, frozen solid, burned alive, or electrocuted within the chaos.
