Chapter 177: A god?

Chapter 177: A god?

I opened my eyes to a vast expanse with nothing but a vast nebulous sky above me. Nebulous swirls were all around me, bearing weaves that had a certain flow to them. Stars dotted the nebulous sky in some sort of pattern I could barely recall.

"Ah shit!" I cursed. "Here we go again." It seemed I was back to this supposed dreamworld or something.

As if on cue, a sappy voice rang out from behind me.

"Welcome back, Damon Darkfell, or should I say, Evan Dexter."

Abruptly turning my head, a exact replica of myself was staring back at me. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought he was a reflection of mine.

"You again huh?" I questioned wearily.

The bastard smirked.

"What do you mean by ’you again’? I’m almost hurt by your disappointed tone." The replica wiped off a fake tear from his eyes.

I scowled.

"Get to the point, bastard."

"Have you been able to figure out who you truly are?" The smile on his face disappeared and his voice dropped a tad bit too low, almost too sinister for my liking.

"First, who the fuck are you really?" I asked. Maybe it was because I was more worried about the heretic attack on the Ivos Gala, but the fact that I didn’t give priority to the fact that I had an entity in my head trying to make me even more insane than I was, was baffling to say the least.

"And what the hell is this place?" I asked looking up at the nebulous stardust.

"Who am I you say?" The replica hummed. "It doesn’t matter who I am, to others I might be a speck on the cosmic fabric of existence, and to you, I might as well be an invincible god."

"A god you say? What a load of bullshit." I scoffed. "You’d have an easier time making me believe you’re a clown."

"How disrespectful, speaking to an exalted such as myself without any notion of respect whatsoever."

As if everything about him had been veiled before me, a sudden presence radiated from him, so subtle, so vast, and so boundless that it dwarfed even the vast nebulous expanse.

His sheer presence proved to me that I was before a divine being, or perhaps a profane being, judging from the feeling I was getting from him.

The reason was that his silhouette became graceful and was surrounded by a divine radiance and an unholy darkness. It was an aura that seemed to be a mixture of both the pure and the profane.

His presence defied all my beliefs in explanation, logic, and science.

I gulped, instinctively taking a step back. In my heart, I felt both reverence and fear for the being before me. I wanted to speak, but my heart was stuck in my throat.

But these feelings... I knew these feelings weren’t mine! They did not belong to me! He was definitely inducing them in me.

Last time, I couldn’t see it... but this time, I could discern it. And what I felt sent chills down my spine. The thought of my earlier self trying to attack this being felt like a pointless act. I could tell even Amon was powerless to do anything against this being let alone I.

Still, fear wouldn’t do me any good, so I steeled my resolve. Taking control of my scattered emotions, I gathered my courage and spoke.

"I guess I’m somewhat convinced."

He looked at me with a cold indifference that sent shivers down my spine, despite my best efforts to remain calm and composed.

He looked at me with a cold indifference that sent shivers down my spine, despite my best efforts to remain calm and composed.

I resisted the urge to lower my eyes and drop my head as the replica finally spoke again.

This time, his voice was a like paradox. It sounded both soothing and unsettling...

Pleasing and revolting...

Beautiful and terrifying...

Divine and unholy...

"Damon Darkfell.... I brought you here this time..."

"No, you didn’t." I raised my voice. "I came here on my own last time, and even now, I came here on my own."

The replica’s lips curled into a smirk.

"Oh, what makes you think that?"

I smirked in turn.

"It might not have been that obvious, but I certainly did quite catch the subtle surprise in your tone when I appeared here."

I felt quite proud of my deductions, though, there might have been another reason to his surprise.

The replica meanwhile, let out a condescending scoff. "I do not have any reason to lie to you, you foolish little thing! I am a God! I could just simply kill you again and send you back, perhaps to your real world this time. Tell me, Evan, how would you like to wake up to your plain, monotonous life again?"

As the replica mentioned this possibility... or rather, issued a threat, my eyes widened. It was indeed a threat.

In the early days of my transmigration, I often thought that I would wake in the real world if I slept, in my reality. I feared that thought. This entity, of course, knew about this fear. Why was I not surprised?

I dreaded the fact that I’d actually wake up back as my unremarkable self. If anything, my life as Evan felt utterly revolting. I had even started to believe the fat that I was Damon Darkfell, and 5hat someone had only inserted the memories of Evan Dexter in my head.

Not only that, another reason that made me dread waking up back as Evan was how utterly mundane and monotous earth was. I truly didn’t want to go back to that life. And most importantly, even with all the power this guy radiated, for some reason, I felt like he wouldn’t be capable of that. But who knows, it might just be my instincts giving me false hope.

"You are lying." I looked back at the so called God. If you could truly do that, you wouldn’t waste time talking to a mere ’thing’ such as myself like you said ear...."

"Keuk!"

Dip! Dip! Dip! Dip!

My eyes widened as I looked down to my chest, or more specifically, where my heart was located. There was a see through hole where my heart was supposed to be.

And there in the outstretched hand of the replica, was my still beating heart.

Keuk!!"

I involuntarily coughed out a mouthful of blood.

"You bastard!!" I coughed out, before darkness took me. "I’ll kill you, bastard, I swear, it doesn’t matter how, but I’ll surely...." I didn’t finish before darkness won.

Unknown to me, after that happened, my body disintegrated from the nebulous expanse.

Immediately after that, the divine and profane aura shrouding the replica disappeared, and he fell to his knees coughing out a mouthful of blood.

"I don’t remember being this insufferable." The replica said staring at the spot I had disappeared from, and wiping the blood off the corners of his mouth.

"Still, this should push everything significantly forward."

-------------

With a suffocating gasp, I shot my eyes open and sat back up. I rubbed my bleary eyes and tried looking around through a bottle-glass blur.

Huffing and puffing, I felt my heart raging like a wild rabid beast, smashing against my chest to the point where even taking a full breath was painful.

Gods, could this be a heart attack? Am I seriously having a heart attack?! What the actual fuck?!

No, on second thought, it couldn’t be a heart attack!

I was a Theta ranked aetherial. No way I’d suffer from something so mundane as a heart attack.

"Gaah!"

But as a low guttural growl of pain escaped through my lips again, I began to doubt my earlier assumption.

I quickly looked down on my chest, only to see my chest still intact. Though, the phantom pain from earlier was still eating through my chest.

I would rather not go back to that nebulous expanse ever again, but from what I felt, it was far beyond me.

Clench!

"Damn that son of a bitch." I stood up, still sweating from beads of sweat. I walked to the glass wall of my dorm room as the sun began rising from the horizon.

"I haven’t even finished the goal I set for myself, and now an even bigger problem has put itself on my path." From transmigrating to this time, I had set for myself a goal spanning seven years, in which I’d have to become the strongest being in Nahaar. But from the looks of it, it’s almost been a year, and I’m nowhere near that.

Right, did I forget to mention that it’s been six months since the heretic attack back at the Ivos gala?
