Chapter 728 - 380 Major News_2
She changed into clean and tidy loungewear, walked downstairs, and there was still a faint smell of alcohol in the living room. Two men lay across the sofas, covered with blankets, sleeping soundly.
She tiptoed into the dining room, and sure enough, her favorite porridge was already laid out.
Yam and red date porridge, a few small golden buns the size of fingers, assorted little side dishes. She took a deep breath, lured by the primal fragrance of the food, once again marveling at Nanny Collins’s magic.
She usually prepares a variety of breakfasts too, Western, Chinese, and sometimes Cantonese dim sum with small steamers full of assorted snacks. But that’s not the magic; the magic is how she seems to know exactly what your stomach needs.
Just like this morning, she’d thought how comforting it would be to drink a bowl of hot porridge, and now this tempting bowl was right there, steaming.
Everything here is actually really nice; the place is beautiful. So beautiful that she often thinks the designer of it must have had an extraordinary heart, serene and simple like a quiet village from ancient times, yet exquisitely stunning in every corner.
She drank the porridge while popping small buns into her mouth, then carefully slipped back upstairs, hoping to sneak out before the two men woke from their drunken sleep. It was really embarrassing here after yesterday’s shameful incident.
Having changed her clothes, she quietly bypassed the sofa and slowly walked towards the door. Once in the yard, she broke into a light jog and disappeared through the gate.
Today, she didn’t call the driver. It took a while before she managed to hail a taxi, not knowing where to go. Going back to M.C Headquarters would clearly be strange.
She somewhat wanted to visit her mother-in-law at the Yates Family’s place. The thought of the word mother-in-law suddenly stung her heart like a needle, so sudden and sharp.
Under that awful man’s manipulation, she had become a woman who indulges in carnal pleasures, undeserving of Wenyard Cooper, hadn’t she?
Even if, in name, she was still his widow.
People on the street hurried back and forth, each striving for their lives, yet she, she didn’t know what she should do, where she should go.
"Avery Jane, what are you doing here? I was just looking for you. Get in the car."
Nora Thompson saw a solitary figure not far from the company, graceful and naturally poised; it was Avery Jane.
In her student days, she was the goddess in many boys’ hearts. As she grew up, her beauty unfolded entirely, as radiant as the sun, almost impossible to behold directly.
"Nora?"
Avery Jane smiled happily, genuinely getting along with her senior. Nora was a deeply wise woman, and conversations with her always felt rewarding.
The car drove into Hayward’s parking lot, and the two took the elevator. Nora’s office was on the sixteenth floor.
Avery Jane looked around Nora’s office, simple and clean, with a few indoor plants that were lush and green, showcasing their vitality in such a winter.
Having a place of one’s own is wonderful, Avery Jane thought enviously as Nora prepared two cups of tea, inviting her to sit down.
"Avery Jane, how do you know Joshua Hughes?"
Even now, Nora still felt puzzled by yesterday’s events. After so many years apart, she always thought Avery Jane wasn’t the type to like someone like Joshua Hughes. Moreover, she could tell that Avery Jane seemed to have her own hidden reasons yesterday.
"Senior, I was married once, probably more than half a year ago..."
The steaming tea stirred Avery Jane’s thoughts back to the past, to that devastating car accident.
When she woke up, she hadn’t even seen Wenyard’s last face, only a cold urn. From visiting the cemetery at night to meeting Joshua Hughes to being coerced repeatedly until she helplessly surrendered, she didn’t know how long she rambled on, or why she couldn’t help but want to confess. Maybe she’d been suppressing it all for too long.
It was such a long story. Nora listened quietly, lamenting why such a beautiful woman had to live such a tragic life. Perhaps fate was jealous of her beauty.
"Senior, I don’t know what I can do, nor how my future life will unfold. For someone like me, who can only hide in the darkness, where does a tomorrow exist?" At the end, Avery Jane tearfully said, silently streaming down and dropping heavily onto her clothes.
