Chapter 244 The Choice Amidst the Mist

Chapter 244 The Choice Amidst the Mist

That night's banquet felt like a glamorous dream. Lin Chuyue, with mixed feelings, barely managed to navigate the social situations around her. Gu Yanchuan's words kept echoing in her mind, those sharp warnings making her increasingly uneasy. She began to doubt whether her trust in Li Zhanchuan had been too blind, or perhaps she really had been kept in the dark, becoming a pawn on his chessboard.

As the banquet progressed, Lin Chuyue and Li Zhanchuan interacted less and less. He maintained his near-perfect composure, like a towering statue, while she struggled to find her lost balance in the shadow of this statue.

As the banquet drew to a close, everyone began to prepare to leave. Li Zhanchuan remained by her side, his steps composed, his expression unchanged. She knew that such occasions were second nature to him, but she felt utterly exhausted. She had no desire to stay any longer.

"Li Zhanchuan, let's go." She finally spoke, her voice low and tinged with a barely perceptible weariness.

Li Zhanchuan glanced at her and smiled slightly: "Are you tired? Let's go back."

The atmosphere inside the car was unusually quiet. Lin Chuyue gazed at the neon lights flowing outside the window, her heart churning. Li Zhanchuan's presence felt both familiar and strange to her. She had once believed that his concern for her was genuine, but Gu Yanchuan's words were like a needle, piercing deep into her heart, forcing her to begin to doubt whether she had been deceived by his carefully woven mask of gentleness.

Back home, Lin Chuyue felt even heavier. Standing by the window, gazing at the stars in the night sky, she suddenly felt as if she were floating in this boundless darkness, surrounded by countless questions and anxieties, and she still couldn't find her true direction.

Li Zhanchuan walked up behind her and asked softly, "What's wrong? Are you in a bad mood?"

Lin Chuyue didn't answer immediately. She turned her head and looked at him. At this moment, Li Zhanchuan's eyes remained unchanged, and his gentle tone was the same. He was like the support that would always be by her side, yet she felt an indescribable fear in her heart.

"Li Zhanchuan," she began slowly, her voice trembling slightly, "I've been wondering, what exactly are your feelings for me?"

Li Zhanchuan seemed to be taken aback for a moment, then smiled slightly: "Why do you ask that question?"

Lin Chuyue took a deep breath, her heart beating faster involuntarily: "I'm not sure, I'm really not sure if I'm being manipulated by you, or if I can truly understand you."

Li Zhanchuan's smile gradually faded, and his eyes became deep and unfathomable, like a bottomless ocean. Lin Chuyue could even feel the turbulent waves hidden within them. He took a step closer to her, gently cupped her chin in his hand, his gaze tender yet carrying an unfathomable undercurrent.

"Chuyue, you are the most important person in my life," he whispered, his voice deep and warm. "No matter what you think, I will always be by your side. You don't need to doubt my feelings."

His words were like a soothing balm, calming Lin Chuyue's heart slightly. However, her rationality remained vigilant. Gu Yanchuan's words resurfaced in her mind, the phrase "you are just a pawn on the chessboard" was impossible for her to ignore.

She tried to calm herself down and slowly said, "But, Li Zhanchuan, you never told me why I got involved in all this. You always led me down a path you set for me, and I never knew your true purpose."

Li Zhanchuan's eyes flickered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He continued to look at her gently, as if pondering her words.

“You know I never do anything unprepared,” he said softly. “However, since you’ve brought this up, I can tell you something.” His voice deepened, carrying an undeniable air of authority. “Everything you’re going through right now has been meticulously planned by me. From your entry into this company to our relationship, it’s all under my control.”

Lin Chuyue's heart skipped a beat, as if a chill ran down her spine. She shook her head weakly, unable to believe what she was hearing.

"What do you mean?" she practically spat out the words, her mind filled with shock and disbelief.

Li Zhanchuan did not answer immediately. He simply lowered his head slightly, looked at Lin Chuyue, and said with eyes as deep as the sea: "Don't you want to know the truth behind it all? All of this is for a bigger goal, and you, I am just a part of your destiny."

These words were like a bombshell, leaving Lin Chuyue's mind blank. She froze on the spot, her throat feeling as if something was blocking it, making it hard to breathe. She tried to struggle, but found herself increasingly unable to control the fear and unease that surged through her.

"Li Zhanchuan, you..." Her voice had become hoarse, "What exactly am I in your plan? A pawn? A tool?"

Li Zhanchuan smiled slightly and gently patted her shoulder: "You'll never understand. You just need to trust me, and leave the rest to me."

His tone was gentle, yet it contained an irresistible force. Lin Chuyue's inner turmoil grew stronger. She took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts, but found herself trapped in a quagmire, the more she struggled, the more unable to extricate herself.

She fell silent, standing there quietly with a blank stare, her heart filled with confusion and fear about the future.
