Chapter 1 Traveling to the Song Dynasty
Chapter 1 Traveling to the Song Dynasty
That day, food blogger Su Yuning finished her work and returned to her rented apartment alone.
As usual, an iced cola, fried chicken, and skewers sat on her computer desk—she'd post them on social media first. Then, she opened her laptop and immersed herself in the captivating world of the story. Her eyes were glued to the screen, as if she were completely engrossed in the plot. Meanwhile, on the other side of the table, a variety of delicious late-night snacks were laid out: fragrant skewers, sweet cola, crispy fried chicken… each one exuding an irresistible aroma, making one's mouth water.
Sometimes she couldn't help but chuckle at the characters' funny dialogue; other times she was worried about the protagonist's predicament; and still other times her heart raced with the tense and exciting plot. Completely immersed in her own little world, she reveled in the double pleasure of watching the show and enjoying delicious food. Time passed slowly, the night grew deeper, but she remained oblivious, still engrossed in the drama and savoring her late-night snack.
"Beep beep beep!" Su Yuning heard a text message notification on her phone. She first pressed the pause button on her laptop keyboard, then picked up her phone to check the message.
"Yu Ning, get some rest early, don't stay up late."
The message was from someone who had a crush on her, but Su Yuning didn't care at all. So she lazily typed a reply.
"You're so long-winded. I still need to watch my show. You should get some rest."
"Okay~" the other party replied helplessly, and then went offline.
Before she knew it, it was already around 2 a.m. Su Yuning finally couldn't stay awake any longer, so she yawned and closed her laptop, then went to sleep.
After graduating from university, Su Yuning slept soundly every night. However, this night, something unprecedented happened to her: sleepwalking! In the dead of night, she seemed to be drawn by a mysterious force, and her body involuntarily got out of bed. At that moment, her consciousness seemed to still be immersed in a dream, but her feet had already left the warm and comfortable bed and stepped into that unknown dark corner.
When she awoke, she found herself in an unfamiliar place, yet what she saw before her evoked pity. The house was utterly dilapidated, seemingly clinging to life after enduring countless years of hardship and erosion. The walls were peeling and crumbling, revealing the rough brickwork beneath; the roof also had several cracks, allowing rainwater to seep in during rainy weather, making the interior damp and dark. Looking around, she saw that the furnishings were extremely sparse, with only a few old pieces of furniture placed forlornly, seemingly silently telling the story of the hardships endured by their owners. The entire room was permeated with an air of decay and decay, making one marvel at the unimaginable poverty and desolation of the family.
Just then, a woman dressed in ancient clothing pushed open the door and entered, carrying a vegetable basket.
Seeing that she was awake, he ran over with great joy, grabbed her hand, and exclaimed...
"Thank goodness! God bless you! Daughter, you're finally awake!"
Su Yuning didn't know how to explain time travel to the woman, so she could only cover up her embarrassment with a smile.
"Daughter, you had a fever and were unconscious for three days and three nights. During that time, your father dug up some medicinal herbs, and I made some soup for you. How are you feeling now? Do you want to eat anything?" the woman asked with concern.
"Yes, I'm a little hungry," Su Yuning replied.
"Alright! It's a good thing you want to eat, it means you're better! I'll go make you something delicious right away!" the woman replied with a smile, then turned and went out to cook, carrying a basket.
Su Yuning sat alone on the bed, her mind racing. Soon, the original owner's memories played out like a slideshow. She quickly learned about the dynasty the original owner lived in, her family members, and her hobbies. Su Yuning breathed a sigh of relief and muttered to herself,
"Thank goodness, this family isn't complicated, I'm sure I can fit in here."
Su Yuning transmigrated to the Song Dynasty, to the Su family's home in Xinghua Village, nestled against the mountains and beside the water. The Su couple had three children: two sons and a daughter. The eldest son was already married and lived separately from them. The second son worked as a waiter in a teahouse in the city, and the youngest daughter was of marriageable age, spending her time doing embroidery and collecting medicinal herbs with her parents. There was also an old woman in the Su family who lived in a thatched hut not far from their home. She enjoyed sunbathing, drying mushrooms, or chatting with other old ladies.
When the woman brought Su Yuning a bowl of hot rice, Su Yuning was dumbfounded. The so-called delicious food was just a dark, murky vegetable soup, with no rice or noodles!
"Is this all we have to eat?" Su Yuning asked sullenly.
The woman said embarrassedly, "Yes, that's all we have left. Please make do with this. Once your father comes back from selling the herbs, we'll have money to buy rice."
"Okay~" Su Yuning had no choice but to bite the bullet and finish the bowl of wild vegetable soup.
Only after she handed the empty bowl to the woman did she belatedly ask, "By the way, have you eaten?"
The woman smiled slightly, "Not yet, Mother isn't hungry."
Then, Su Yuning apologized, "I'm sorry, I was so hungry that I ate all the food in one go, so I didn't think to leave you any."
The woman waved her hand in response, "It's nothing, it's nothing~"
"Mom! I'm back!"
Before they could see the person, they heard the voice. The woman and Su Yuning looked in the direction of the sound at the same time.
It turns out that the second son of the Su family has returned!
"Mom! I'm hungry! Is there anything to eat at home?!"
"That's all. I'll go dig some wild vegetables now. You stay home and take care of my little sister," the woman replied gently.
"Okay!" The second son of the Su family readily nodded in agreement.
The woman, carrying a basket in one hand and a shovel in the other, was about to leave when she turned back to give a final word of advice.
"Your little sister had a fever for several days before she got better, so you're not allowed to take her out to run around!"
"I understand, Mother! Don't worry!" The second son of the Su family patted his chest and assured her.
Only then did the woman feel relieved and go out.
Afterwards, Su Yuning tugged at the sleeve of the second son of the Su family and acted coquettishly.
"Second Brother! I miss you so much! Tell me about the interesting things that happened in the city!"
"Okay!" the second son of the Su family replied with a smile, cleared his throat, and then began to tell her.
"The bustling city of the Song Dynasty was a lively place with a constant flow of traffic. The streets and alleys crisscrossed like a complex spider web. Shops lined both sides of the road, with banners fluttering and signs dancing in the wind. Cries of vendors rose and fell, and the streets and alleys were crowded with people, shoulder to shoulder."
"Why do shops hang banners? Aren't there plaques?" Su Yuning asked curiously, tilting her head.
“Little sister, you don’t know this, but the signboard can only attract old customers. Many new customers are attracted by the banners. After all, the latter are brightly colored and eye-catching, and can be seen from afar,” the second son of the Su family explained, patting Su Yuning’s head.
Su Yuning wasn't annoyed; instead, she gave him a thumbs-up in praise.
"Brother knows so much, amazing!"
The second son of the Su family smiled smugly, then continued to describe the bustling city streets to her.
People dressed in all sorts of clothes strolled to and fro in the bustling city. Children laughed and played, weaving through the crowd, carrying various trinkets and beaming with smiles. They were filled with happiness!
"Do all children play with rattles?" Su Yuning asked, resting her chin on her hand as she leaned against the bed.
The second son of the Su family, sitting with his legs crossed, answered with slightly narrowed eyes.
"That's all outdated! City kids play with windmills, clay figurines, diabolo, and things like that!"
"I really want to go to the city!" Su Yuning said with anticipation.
"There's no time like the present, I'll take you today!" the second son of the Su family replied with a smile.
"Yay! Yay! Second brother is the best!" Su Yuning responded happily.
Just as she was putting on her shoes and getting ready to go out with her second brother, the woman returned carrying a vegetable basket.
At this moment, the woman's face turned from cloudy to gloomy, and she glared fiercely at Su Lao Er.
"Have you forgotten all of Mother's instructions?"
Su Lao Er immediately wilted like a frostbitten eggplant, and replied listlessly, "Mother, I was wrong~"
"Stand facing the wall and reflect on your mistakes!" the woman commanded angrily.
"Okay, I understand." Su Lao Er obediently faced the wall and reflected on his actions.
"And you!" The woman pointed at Su Yuning with displeasure.
"Okay." In order not to upset her elders, Su Yuning had no choice but to obediently do as she was told.
