As blood gushed from the wound, staining Jane's petite body red, the man collapsed to the ground, releasing his grip on her.
Bang
The world seemed to hold its breath, everyone shocked by this sudden change.
Kaya stared wide-eyed at everything unfolding before her, the first to regain her composure.
"simple!"
Kaya's heart pounded, her chest heaving. The sight she saw almost took her breath away. Jane stood there, tears streaming down her face, trembling, but she was alive. Before Kaya could fully register what was happening, her legs moved, and she ran towards her daughter.
She knelt down, pulled Jane into her arms, and held her tightly, as if she would never let go. Tears streamed down her face, and her body trembled with the release of fear.
Kaya's voice trembled with a mix of emotions as she whispered comforting words to her daughter. "Jane, you're safe. You're safe now."
"Wow--!"
Jane's sobs were heartbreaking; her small body trembled violently with fear and a surge of relief. She clung tightly to her mother as if her life depended on her, burying her face in Kaya's shoulder.
"Mommy, I'm so scared...it's so scary...Waaah—!"
Kaya gently rocked her, making soothing circles on Jane's back with her hands. She held her daughter tightly, as if wanting to shield her from all the pain in the world.
“It’s alright, Jane.” Kaya’s voice was gentle as medicine, like a soothing melody, designed to calm the storm in Jane’s heart. “You’re alright now, you’re here with me.”
However, as Kaya comforted her daughter, her eyes darted around, trying to figure out who had fired the shot.
Her gaze fell on a young man who was about the same age as her nephew.
His face was covered by a hood, but black hair could be seen through the edge of the hood. He exuded the aura of an ordinary person, so Kaya immediately ruled out that he was the culprit.
However, just as she was about to turn her attention elsewhere, suddenly, her brown eyes met the boy's purple eyes.
Those eyes were completely still, like someone who had lost everything.
'Hmm?' Kaya asked herself. Those eyes seemed familiar, and then she remembered.
It looks like the eyes from that time.
However, Kaya had no time to ponder whose eyes those were. She looked around, searching for any trace of the attacker, but found nothing.
'He might be nearby,' she thought.
It was an unknown attacker, one she herself hadn't even noticed. Therefore, she needed to be careful.
She didn't want her daughter to take any more risks. Kaya focused her attention on her daughter and continued to comfort her.
Jane's sobs gradually turned into whimpers, and she slowly relaxed, nestled in her mother's arms. She gently pulled away a little, looking at Kaya through teary eyes.
“Mom, Mom… I thought I… I thought…” Her voice trembled, and her eyes still showed a mixture of fear and relief.
Kaya's heart ached at the vulnerability in her daughter's voice. She cupped Jane's face in her hands, her tears mingling with Jane's.
“You are strong, Jane.” Kaya’s voice was firm, tinged with pride. “I’m here, and I will always protect you.”
Jane nodded, gripping Kaya's arm tightly, as if she needed to connect herself to reality.
“I love you, Mom.” Jane’s voice was low, but it was full of deep affection that words could not fully express.
Tears welled in Kaya's eyes, her heart overflowing with love for her daughter. She lowered her head and gently kissed Jane's forehead.
"I love you more than ever, Jane. I promise you, I will always be by your side."
"..."
After she finished speaking, the girl did not respond.
'What's going on?' Kaya immediately looked at her daughter, wondering what had happened, but in reality there was nothing wrong.
"Uh-huh……"
The girl slept quietly in her mother's arms. A few tear stains remained on her face, and she occasionally hiccuped.
Kaya gently wiped away her daughter's tears, her heart filled with relief and worry.
"Tsk!"
Just then, a sharp smacking sound broke the silence. Kaya's gaze abruptly shifted to the injured demon contractor, who had managed to stand up.
The wounded demon contractor slowly propped himself up, his body trembling with pain. Blood stained his clothes, but his eyes gleamed with unease. Despite his severe injuries, his gaze still held a tenacious spirit of resistance.
Kaya's instinct was to confront him and ensure he posed no further threat. But the memory of firing the gun held her back. The unknown attacker might still be nearby, silently observing, waiting for the right moment. Her protective instincts were reignited; she knew she couldn't risk putting Jane's safety at risk.
As the demon contractor struggled to regain his footing, Kaya tightened her grip on Jane. Her brown eyes locked onto the man, her face filled with vigilance and determination. She was ready to face anything.
"It's not over yet." His voice was heavy yet firm, cutting through the air like a blade.
His words were a threat, one that Kaya could feel piercing her very bones. Anger and fear surged within her; she wanted him to pay for what he had done, but her priorities were clear.
She stared intently at the demon contractor, noticing the shifting in his gaze, his eyes darting around as if assessing the situation. A sly smile crept across his lips, and Kaya instantly understood that he knew her predicament.
“You might need to focus on your next step, Kaya Hartley.” His voice carried a chilling satisfaction. “This reunion has been very inspiring. But remember, this is far from over.”
Kaya clenched her jaw, snorting heavily as she tried to calm her rage. She knew she couldn't let him run rampant, but considering the possibility of further attacks on Jane's safety, she dared not make a move.
Kaya sighed deeply and made her decision. Her gaze never left the demon contractor, but she didn't rush forward. Instead, she held Jane tightly, still protecting her.
“You’re right,” she said, her voice carrying the same determination as his. “This is far from over. But right now, I have more important things to deal with.”
The demon contractor's smile grew even brighter; he clearly knew he had touched Kaya's sore spot, and he was completely absorbed in it.
"As expected, you're still that selfish bitch, only caring about the people around you."
His voice echoed through the museum, but Kaya remained motionless, her expression unchanged. She held her daughter tightly in her arms, her eyes fixed on the demon contractor. She could feel Jane trembling in her embrace, a reminder of the stakes of this dangerous game.
As the demon contractor finished speaking, he began to move. Kaya's gaze turned to him, and she saw a group of people standing there, their expressions bewildered and injured, yet still alive, struggling to regain their senses amidst the chaos. They were survivors of this nightmare, still vulnerable and helpless.
Kaya's cold gaze swept over the group. She sensed the demon contractor's intentions.
"do not want!"
"Please help us, Miss Kaya!"
"Help!"
Their shouts reached her ears, but she didn't move. She just stood there, watching quietly.
“Look...this is you, that selfish bitch. Even now, you're abandoning all these people for your children, just like you did before.”
As he continued speaking, the demon contractor stretched out his hands, his fingers emitting a morbid green light.
When his hands touched the wounded, their faces contorted in agony. Kaya's brown eyes remained unwavering as she watched silently.
Between people she doesn't know and her daughter, her child will always be the priority.
The scene before them unfolded like a slowly recurring nightmare. The demon contractor's power drained the life force from the wounded, and as their lives faded, his form began to revive.
"Never forget... everything you do will have consequences in the future. I will make it happen."
"Everyone will reap what they sow."
With these words, the demon contractor pushed the artifact in his hand and disappeared from his original position, leaving only a small wisp of smoke.
Kaya's expression remained indifferent, her heart unmoved by the choice she had made.
This is a cruel world where the strong rule, and she has no regrets about choosing her own child over those strangers.
She wasn't a hero, nor was she fighting for justice. She was simply a strong mother, a mother who only wanted to protect her child.

Just then, heavy footsteps echoed through the museum. A group of uniformed officials rushed into the scene, their expressions a mixture of urgency and concern.
"First, secure the scene and assess the situation. If any seriously injured individuals are found, provide immediate first aid."
They quickly assessed the scene, observing the injured, the chaos, and the still figure of Kaya holding Jane in her arms.
One of the prosecutors, exuding an air of authority, approached Kaya with a gaze that was both compassionate and resolute. "Miss Kaya Hartley, are you alright? What happened here?"
Kaya turned her gaze to her daughter, a warm expression on her face.
Seeing that Jane was sleeping peacefully, she raised her head again, her face showing a serious and professional expression.
“When I arrived, the situation was extremely critical,” Kaya began, her voice calm and steady. “A monster and a demon contractor launched a planned attack on this place. The security perimeter was quickly breached, and chaos ensued.”
She glanced around, her gaze briefly lingering on the injured and the devastation around her. "I acted immediately to protect my daughter and those around me. I successfully created a barrier for Jane, ensuring her safety. Once that was done, I worked with several other capable people to help the injured and guide them to safety."
Her words were concise and focused on the facts and actions taken, rather than the accompanying emotions. She continued to focus on the prosecutor, professionally recounting what had happened.
"We fought off the attackers and successfully repelled them. However, the demon contractor used some kind of artifact to drain the life force from the wounded, restoring his own power. He said a few words and then disappeared, leaving only a wisp of smoke."
At this point, Kaya did not mention the choice she made. She had already decided to ensure that what happened here would never be reported to the media or the public.
"I will provide the necessary information and fully cooperate to ensure these people are brought to justice." After she finished speaking, she slowly hugged her daughter.
The prosecutor nodded, listening attentively to Kaya's account. "Thank you, Miss Kaya. Your efforts have undoubtedly saved many lives today. We will give you the necessary time for Miss Jane to receive treatment. If you wish to have a quick examination, you can go to our doctors. Although they will be very busy, I will arrange an examination space for Miss Jane."
After the official finished speaking, he looked at the little girl in Kaya's arms.
“I’m so glad Miss Hartley is alright.”
Hearing this, Kaya nodded.
“Indeed, thankfully she’s alright.” Her mind was filled with the image of the unknown attacker. He had saved her daughter, but he was also a threat.
Someone who can evade all her senses, even though all her senses are focused on her daughter and another demon contractor.
'It seems I'm still lacking in detection skills.' At that moment, Kaya secretly vowed to find the unknown attacker, unaware that he was standing right behind her.
However, seeing the attention the prosecutor was giving her, she naturally turned her attention back to her.
"What's your name?" she asked the female official in front of her, noticing a slight smile appear on her face.
“My name is Kian Miller, and I’m from Police Station 15 in Nissoria.”
"Understood, Miss Miller. I will remember your name."

"Mmm...Mom..."
Seeing the little girl wriggling in her arms, Kaya decided to leave this bloody place immediately, knowing that she no longer needed to stay there.
And so, she left the scene and walked outside...
