J Jt J VOL V I, b. 3 THE NAFZGER HERITAGE NEWS JULY 1, 1977 Our thanks to Mrs. Leo’ Clap- per of Mansfield who sent us a vast number of marriages, deaths and births of her family line and of other Nafzger lines that she collects from the newspapers in her area. We continue to look for the connection of this family line to what appears to Matthew who landed in America in 1749. Our hope is that some reader will provide the clue or information for Mrs. Clapper. Our thanks to Carroll Nafziger of Minier, illinois who continues to work on the Christian Nafziger làmily group of Hopedale, illinois. klditions to the vast amount of in- frmation we already have on file in- dude recent births and information ifi the Harold Sutter-Stella Rein- hirdt family. The addition of appro imately two dozen descendants neans that the lust of descendants ft this family line passes the 2,000 nark. Our thanks to Frank Nofsinger ol Sturgis, Michigan who sent anothet packet of material on the Valentine Nafziger-Nofsinger family line. Va! enting landed in America in 1831 and made his home in Wayne County, Ohio. Recently, some descendant of the line placed a new stone and re stored the burial site of Valentine in Wayne County, Ohio. Thus far, the News has been able to covered who was re for this fine act of respect for our heritage. We are grateful for information received from John B. Noftsger ol Spring Valley, Ohio which helps up correct and update the featured lam- ily group in the last issue of the news; John’s great great grand. parents are John and Mary Noftsger who lived in cliton County, Ohio. He ells us that John and Mary Nofsger are buried at Burtonvillé, Ohio. Our thanksTor the information west and north from Brantford. Land in Pennsylvania had become scarce and many young couples had already gone north to Can- ada to pioneer ‘ in what are now the townships of Waterloo and Woo!rich. The Nafziger who spoke to Maitiand in 1822 made a deal, in brief, was that Mennonite families Nafz promised to bring from Bavaria would be a! loted 200 acres each, ‘of which they would get 50 acres free, ifthey bought l5oacres Surely, this deal made by Christian Nafzger n 1822 led to the decison made by Samuel Nafziger in 1855 to settle in Ontario, Canada. He was born near Trebo France in 1830 and decided to leave Trebo when faced with probably conscription into the French Army. While Samuel is our featured family line in this issue ofthe NEWS, webelie that the story probably continues backwards to the year 1822 although we have no documentation that this was the case. Most of the informa tion of Samuel Nafziger who wasborn in 1830 was cornoiled by EZRA NAFZIGER of Intercourse Pennsylvania . The list of descen dants was first collected by Ezra in 1967 and represents the most complete list of Nafziger descendants in Canada that we have found. Out thanks to Ezra for his fine effort. According to information received by Ezra from Bishop Christian Nafziger, Crogen, New York,. this Samuel Nafziger’s father was married twice, once to a Miss Bachman who SAMUEL SETTLES IN CANADA The story of our featured family in this issue ofthe News must have begun in 1822 when Christiam Nafziger traveled alongway by a roundabout route to arrive at the little Upper Canadian town ofToronoto for his appointment with Governor Maitland. From his home in southern Bavaria, he had made his way down the Rhine to Holland and taken ship from Amsterdam for the long sailing voyage to North Amenca. The voyage was longer fOr him than for most, because the ship on which he got passage was bound for New Orleans. After he landed in Louisiana he madehis way overland up the full length of the United States to Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. Christian Nafziger, arriving.in Pennsylvania I 1822, had the sam ,errand as the earlier Mennonite arrivals had, when they were moving from Europe to William Penn’s colony in the early 1700’s. He was looking for a place where he, and his Men- nonite neighbors in Bavaria, could live in peace. It was to find some way of escape from the dilemma of Bavarian Mennonites that Christian Nafziger made his long and diviousjourney to the Established Mennonite settlements in Pennsylvania. When he got there the Lancaster County people advised his to g north to Canada to see the new settlements which were being opened on the new wilderness frontier Commendation SUBSCRIPTION PRICE TO THE NEWS $5.00 YEARLY Continued on page3 . Thank you very much for me copies of the NAFZGER HERTAGE NEWS. • Since receiving the three copies of the HERITAGE NEWS which you sent I have borrowed copies of all the back issues from my friend and as- sociate Mrs. Vera Root, a descen dand of Peter Naffziger (1789-1885) ‘ ‘the Apostle. ‘ ‘ I am not a descen dant of this family, but have done some . research on it as many members. of this family married into my family relationship. I am, however, descended from a family named Nafziger. I will corn- ment on this family at greater length elsewhere. Right now I would like to say that I have enjoyed going• through the HERITAGE NEWS and found the names of many cousins as contributing ‘ . information - Mrs. Charles Oliver of St. Petersburg Florida (Mar. 1, 1977, p.3), Cathryn Camp and Mabel Esch (Dec.11, 1976, p. 1), and Ralph Naffziger of Visalia, California (dec. 1 , 1976, p. 2)’ who is really descended from three groups of Naffzigers - see enclosed chart. First of all I will comment on Mrs. Oliver’s information. In the third gençration of the Kennel Pam- ily there were two brother - Johannes (1781-1831) and Peter (17844860). • Johannes married: dalena Nafziger (1791-1873) who wa indeed a daughter of Peter Naffzigei of Groversheim and a full sister tc Peter Naffziger ‘ ‘The Apostle” (1789-1885). Johannes and Magda lena then married a John Holly on 23 Feb . where Johannes died of typhoid. Magdalena then married a John Holly on 23 Feb. 1834 who died 9 June 1835. A little later Magdalena came to Illinois with three of her children and died in Illinois and is buried in Herstein Cemtery near Morton. There are many descendants of Johannes and Magdalena (Nafziger) Kennel spread throughout the United States I am descended from Peter Kennel (1784-1860) the brother who remained in Germany and stayed on the family farm - the Herfingerhof. Peter married Magdalena Holly (1790-1853) and they had 13 children 3 died young 6 came to America, and 4 stayed in Germany. Their oldest child, and one of those that stayed in Germany, was a daughter Jakobena (3 Apr. 1813-2 Mar. 1895) who married Petter Naffziger (1804- 1873). This Peter Naffziger was from Uberau, and I think, although I have not proven, that Peter Naffziger (1804-1873) was the sone Peter Nafziger of Peter Naffziger ‘ ‘of Uberau” and Pheobe Fischer, who stayed in Germany. The Amelia Kennel (1857-1943) who married Ferdinand D. Naffziger (1854-1913) was a daughter of Jacob Kennel (1821-1909) and a grand- daughter of Johannes and Magda lene (Naffziger) Kennel. I have not yet run across Ferdinand’s parent- age or ancestary. I said earlier in my letter that I would comment on a family named Nafziger that I am descended from’. You are not totally unfamiliar with this family however. I am descended from the father of John Nafziger (1802-1856) who was featured in the Dec. 1, 1976 issue of the HERITAGE NEWS. . Christian Nafziger was a tiller of soil in Lorraine, France and his child- ren were bOrn in Burscheit, Lorraine. Christian married Catharine Maurer (1780-1845). Catharina Maurer’s mother’s maiden name was suppos edly Kathryn Esch born in Luwfit, Germany. Apparently Christian Naf i2er came to the United States, but in Union Cemetery, between Meta mora and Washington, illinois. Christian and Catharina Maurer Nafziger had six children: • 1 .) Christian, who married a woman named Barbara and had several children. He lived 4½ miles north of Metamora and it was to his home that John and Anna (9erber) Nafziger came when arrived in . Illinois in 1837. 2.) John, 13 Feb. 1802-7 Oct. 1856 married about 1832 Anna Gerber (30 July 1809-26 Feb. 1885) the daughter of Nickolas Gerber (1772/73-1840) and Magdalena Becker (1779/80- 1840) who died in 1840 on their way up the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Anna Gerber was born at Gensburg Alsace, in the Vosges Mountains about 30 miles from Stra sbourg. The family name was Gerber, but Ann’s brothers changed the name to Garber in the United States. 3.) Barbara, ‘1814/15-June 1850, buried in Union Cemetery. 4 Magdalena, born about 1815 mar- riedPeter Gingerich (b. about 1811 in Germany) and they had several children. Peter and Magdalena lived in Tazewell County, Illinois. 5.) Jacobine, 1817-10 Oct. 1848, buried in Union Cemetery. 6.) Catherine, 2 June 1818-3 Oct. 1876 married 24 Mar. 1842 Christian Gerber (1814-1877 who changed his name to Garber k the United States. Christian was also a son of Nickolas and Magdalena (Becker) Gerber and was with them on the trip to New Orleans and whçn they died on the Mississippi - Christian continued on to Spring Bay and found • his sister and brother near Metamora. I am a great-great-great-grand- son of Christian and Catherine (Nafziger) Garber. My great-grand- mother, Katie Garber Wurmnest published a history of Christian and Catherine (Nafziger) Garber in 1941. I inherited her rough notes which contained a lot of information. From ther I did research in ceseteries and . public records. Most of my iinforma tion on the John and Anna (garber) Nafziger family is from Emile Kinsinger’s published history and family tree. At a later date I will construct as chart of the family of Peter and Jak obena (Kennel) Naffziger of the Herfingerhop, Germany, as I have it. I hope that this information is of use to you. STEVEN R. Recently, I found a letter my aunt had written to me about my great grandmother’s brother - Peter Craig Noffsinger. They were children of Martin and Matilda Henthorn Noffsinger. She mentions Peter Craig moved from Nodaway County, Missouri to Beatrice Nebraska and kept blood- hounds to track down criminals - he was a law officer when she (my aunt) was a little girl. My aunt is now 77 years old. MRS. RILEY BROWN Fort Scott, Kansas. Information in the clipping enclosed with Mrs. Brown’s letter. ‘ ‘News notes from Hiattville 100 years ago - 1876. One of our old citzens, Vai Nafsiger has sold his farm to E.B. Krenz, lately from Henry, illinois. Mr. Nafziger will leave for illinois immediately after election.” Our thanks to Bonnie J. Naftzger Hansen of Hammond, Indiana for a lot of good inform- ation on a Naftzer familygroup that were not listed in our records. We are quite certain that the line will connect to Jacob Nafzger who landed in 1750 although we will need some ad- ditional information to be sure that the con- nection is correct. We are writing to Bonnie to see if she can provide some additional inform- ation. Mrs. Vera Root of Carlock, Illinois wrote me and told me about your paper. I have some information that may be of interest to you. I am familiar with the family of Peter Naffziger “the Apostle” and his various brothers and sisters, half-siblings, and step siblings. While I am not descended from this group, various of my uncles, aunts, and cousins have married descendant of this family group. I am also familiar to a certain extent with Christian Naffziger who led the emigration to Ontario in 1826. But the family I am most familiar with, and is the family from which I am descended is the family of Christian Nafziger. A summary of information I have on his family follows: CHRISTIAN NAFZIGER lived in or near Bur scheit, Lorraine, France. Apparently came to the United State - to illinois a farmer. He was married in Lorraine. CATHERIN MAURER, believed to be the Catherin Nafziger (1780-1850) buried in Union Cemetery in Washington Township, Tazewell County, illinois. Family tradition says that Catherine’s mother was Kathryn Esch, born in Luwfit, Germany. They had six children. 1. Christian, married Barbara - called Chris. This man was living on a farm 4 miles north of Metamora in the winter of 1837-38. He and his wife had four children of whom we have record. 2. John,(featured in the December,1976 issue of the i John was a tarmer and also a Mennonite minister. He had been ordained a bishop in Lorraine. In Illinois he served for a time with Christian Engle for the Amish churches in central illinois. John travelec frequently, visiting Amish Settlements in Bureau County’ and those Amish settlements near Wesley City and other places. He was one of the ministers when a brick meeting- house was raised in Partridge Township Woodford County. From this congregation arose the Metamora Mennonite Church . 3r. Barbara 1814-1850. Burial in Union Cern- etery. 4. Magdalena, born in 1815, married Peter Gingerich. They were the parents of seven children. In 1850, they lived in Woodford County. 5. Jacobina 1817-1848. Buried in Union Cern- etery. 6. Catherine - 1818.1876, married in 1842 to Christian Garber, the brother of Anna Garber who married John Nafzeger. He and his wife first lived southwest of Metamora, Ulinois, but they soon moved to a farm 2 miles south and 1 mile west of Washington, Illinois. Christian and Catherine had 11 children. They are my great-great-great-grandparents. STEVEN R. ESTES Normal, illinois 106th Birthday Celebratior Garden City, Mo.-Before the turn of the century Mrs. Amanda Wykle, a newlywed, was in such poor health that her doctors ordered to move to Colorado for six months. Today she is 106 years old. Mrs. Wykle, who lives in Garden City with her daughter, Mrs. Fern Plank, has lost most of her sight and Hearing, but before that happened she kent up on world affairs through television and radio. And when she turned 9S eleven years ago, she cele brated by going up in an airplane for the first time. ‘ ‘Mother never believed in womens’s liberation, ‘ ‘ Mrs. Plank said. ‘ ‘She believes a woman’s place is in the home taking care of her fam ily nd loving them. She helped her husband in the store sometimes, but most of her life was spent in her home.” Mrs. Wykie is the second of nine children born to Martin and Lydia Ziegler. Her father.afarmer nd ear. penter, had moved his family in 187& from Wayne County, Ohio, to a farm- in Missouri. At age 20 she married- her sweetheart, Kardon Wykle, living on the farm they inherited- from his parents. Upon returning with their daugh— ter from the Colorado trip, the couple found that most oftheirlivestock haó—. died and that they were virtuallf• broke. In 1901 the Wykle settled in a house in Garden City, keeping their farm animals in the back alley. Wykle went looking for work and- found it in Morland Brothers Gener al Store. By 1921 the two had saved- enough money to purchase a produce store and go into business for them— selves. Wykle ran the store until he died in 1947 at the age of 78. Hi widow then took up residence witl her daughter. The following article was sent to us by Frank Nofsinger of Sturgis, Michigan. Frank has gathered much of the data we have on file on the Valentine Nafziger-Nofziger family. (entered the U.S. in 1831). As I re call, Frank uncovered that fact thaV another member descendant of this family line lived to be 103 years old. It seem long and useful lives appear in this family line more than once. PUBLISHED EVERY MARCH, JULY, SEPTEMBER AND DECEMBER Page Three LETTERS LETTERS LETTERS LETTERS I have been receiving the Nafzger Heritage News right along but regret that I have not found a single clue that might lead to: SAMUEL NOFFSINGER born May 12, 1803 at Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virgiriaia and his wife LUCY FLEAGER (PHLEGOR-PFLEEGOT) who was born February 25, 1807 at Fincastle. You may recall of the story in the September 1976 issue of the News . . when we announced a restoration project undertaken by a group of students from Palmyra area high school students. The students set about to repair the old Nafzger fam. ily cemtery plot located just north of Palmyra, Pennsylvania. Mr. Stewart Schule, one of the school officials who spearheaded the project, writes that the burial plot in beginning to look rather shabby from the lack of mowing and general maintenance again. He asks me to issue an appeal for any descendants of this plot to provide fund that might provide some care for the care and maintenance of the plot each year. He could arrange for some local help to see that it is mowed each Memor ial • Day and provide some other maintenance work if we so desire. Thus, if any Nafzger descendants are interested in helping with this fund, please make the check payable to Mr. Stewart Schule and he will see tht it gets their proper care and maintenance. Approximately ±wetve years .ago. my children, myself and my pa Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Noffsinger visited in Atchison with my brother, Dr. & Mrs. C.P. I am the Great Granddaughter of Peter Noffsinger ofAtchison County. I found an article in the book “KANSAS” which is a reproduction of the History of Kansas by A1. Andreas published 1883. The repro- duction of “KANSAS” a Bicenten nial Project of the Atchison, Kansas, in cooperation with the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka, Kansas, was published in 1976. We received a long letter with lots of information from Mrs. Muriel Oliver of St. Petersburg, Florida. There isn’t much doubt about the family historian of the Kennel fam lies and have discovered Naffzigers marrying into the Kennel family a number of times. She sent us page,s of data on Naffzigers Kennels and the information was families of N fzigers that we did not have any re cord of in our files. Our thanks to Mrs. Oliver for a very superb effort in helping us piece to the very difficult Naffziger family line. It would appear that many of the Naf fziger family line. It would appear that many of the Naffzigers of her genealogy will connect to Peter of Groverheim Peter Noffsinger passed away in 1891 and I believe his wife, Margaret passed away in 1915, so I am assuming the information for the first book of Kansas in 1883 was from Margaret and Peter Noffsinger. since I am right now in the depths of trying to find out more about one of my kin- smen (female) who married a Noffsinger, in Montgomery County, OhIo, so I am interested in subscrib ing to the Nafzger Sarah Sleppy, d/o Jacob Sleppy and Mary Magdalena Sleppy, b. in Pa., married 13 May, 1841, to Samuel Noffsinger, Montgomery Co., Ohio. They later moved to De fiance, Ohio, and had six children, and it is that group that I am wanting more information on. Sarah Sleppy was a sister of my great grandmother Catherine Sleppy, who married John Lehman in 1836, In Montgomery Co., Ohio. MRS. We contacting our counsin whose grandmother was this Barbara HARRY NAFZIGER Ohio Editor’s Note - Orval C. Myers of Columbus, Ohio will be glad to read your letter. He has been trying to find additional information on his line. I was particularly interested in the last edition of Nafzger Hertage News as you ask for information on Jacob Nafziger who married Julia Halbeck. Jacob and Julia Nafziger esided in Roanoke, Illinois. They were my grandparents. My father was Albert J. Nafziger, born in 1879 and he married Minnie Danforth Holland who was born in 1884. They resided in Washington, Illinois. I am extremely interested in locating in- formation regarding the parents of my grandfather, Jocob Nafziger.
