Two Brothers Arrive in America
HOW TO USE THE CHART
This issue of the Nafzger Heritage News features the family line of Christian Nafzi ger (t792- The chart found on pages two E live graphically illustrates the va rious relationship of its mem bers. The first digit of the number before a person’s name indicate the generation. for example, 313 is the third generation and the 13 is just a method of numbering each member of the famly. Refer to the chart and find the num ber for a particular member of the family and then, refer to the number found on page three, four, or six for detail information such as birth, children, etc.
As you can see, there is considerable missing informa tion . How much can you sup ply? Look over the informa lion and see how much you can fill in. Ee sure to send the missing information to The Nafzger Heritage News, 120 Edgewood Drive, Grafton, Ohio, 44044. In this way, another issue of the News can be published for your next family reunion with all the in formation. A final chart will be Ψrinted when the information has been collected.
The family line of Christ- ian (1792-1873) and Veronica Burko\ (1797-1855) appears to be one of the smaller Nafzger lines in terms of numbers. However, what the line lacks in size appears to be more than matched in numbers con—
The above picture is the tombstone and burial site for the first burial made in the Hopedale Mennonite Cemetery, just west of Hopedale, Illinois. As can be seen from ‘he in scription, it was Christian Nafziger and his v Ver onica. Christian was the head of the family featured in this issue of The Nafzger Heritage News.
crossing was made by sail and and approximately 43 days
later, he set fool in America at New Orleans. They travel ed by fool along the M ippi River via Peoria to Taze well County. It can be assummed that Christian was 21 or 22 years old and John was 14 or 15 years old when the jour ney was made. Christian married Elizabeth Zehra in 1851. Elizabeth was born in Atsace and made the journey to Amer ica in 1849.
It is not clear u -t when John Nafziger married Mary Eurkey, but it would appear to have been around 1860. A few years after Christian and John made the difficult journey to America, they enabled their parents, Christian and Veron ica to make the trip. The boys worked for $ a month so that the rest of the famify could join them in their homeland.
By 854, John made hs first acquisiton of land in the area by purchasing one quar ter section of land in Tazewell County. Later, John was to acquired 60 acres for each his six children, mjch of which still remains in the pos session of Nafziger today. the practice of providing land for the children is a practice that accounts for so many Nafziger in T Count today.
Perhaps no other community in the United Stales can boast of more Nafzgers per capita or per square mile than Hopedale in Tazewell County, Illinois. Part of the reason so many Nafzgers live in and around Hopedale today can be traced to Bishop Christ- an Nafziger. He acquired his release from the Castle Weifbach estate in Germany on May 4, 840, to leave the confines of the estate for America. T with his brother John, Christian

trbuted to the professional and teaching ranks in the U- States. According to mail received at the Heritage News Office, Christian’s line produced dozens of school teachers, a dentist, school admnistrator, and several nurses.
